Carmen Electra on Baywatch: Lani McKenzie, Season 8 and the Show’s Late-90s Era

Carmen Electra played lifeguard Lani McKenzie in season 8 of Baywatch, which aired from September 1997 to May 1998, and she later reprised the role in the 2003 reunion film Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding. She joined at the height of the show’s international syndication run, one of the last seasons before the series relocated to Hawaii. This guide explains the role, where season 8 sits in the show’s history, and what made late-1990s Baywatch such a fixture of the era.
Factual sections are sourced at the end. Paragraphs marked “Editor’s note” are our commentary.
Who was Lani McKenzie?

Lani McKenzie (listed in some episode guides as Leilani McKenzie) was one of the Los Angeles County lifeguards in the show’s main ensemble during season 8. Electra was a main cast member for that one season, which Wikipedia’s article on her describes as her breakthrough role. She was already familiar to younger viewers from co-hosting MTV’s Singled Out, and the two jobs overlapped during the 1997–98 television season.
She came back as Lani for Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, a reunion TV film broadcast on Fox in February 2003.
Editor’s note: Plot summaries for individual season 8 episodes vary between fan sites and listings, so we have not summarised Lani’s storylines here. If you want to follow her arc, the episode list on Wikipedia and the season 8 DVD releases are the most reliable places to start.
Season 8 at a glance
- Air dates: September 22, 1997 to May 18, 1998.
- Episodes: 22.
- Distribution: first-run syndication (the show had left NBC after its first season).
- Cast changes: Carmen Electra joined as Lani McKenzie, and Kelly Packard, who had appeared earlier as a guest, became a regular as lifeguard April Giminski.
Season 8 sits two seasons before the series changed setting. From 1999 the show was retitled Baywatch: Hawaii with an overhauled cast, and it ended in 2001.
How Baywatch got to the late 1990s
Cancelled after one season
Baywatch was created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann and premiered on NBC in September 1989. Its first season finished 73rd of 103 shows in the seasonal ratings, and NBC cancelled it in 1990.
Revived in syndication
David Hasselhoff and the creators brought the show back for first-run syndication in September 1991. Selling directly to stations, rather than relying on a network, kept it on air for another decade. The run produced a spin-off, Baywatch Nights (1995–97), and several direct-to-video films.
A worldwide audience
Guinness World Records lists Baywatch under “Largest TV audience – series”, and Wikipedia, citing that entry, describes it as having become the most-watched television series in the world, with a weekly audience of over 1.1 billion viewers. That figure is a Guinness estimate rather than a measured rating, so it is best read as an indication of the show’s international reach.
The late-90s Baywatch era

Editor’s note: By 1997 Baywatch was less a lifeguard drama than a global pop-culture shorthand, recognisable for its red swimsuits, slow-motion running and California beaches. Casting a familiar MTV host fits a pattern of the period, when syndicated dramas, music television and men’s magazines often drew on the same pool of young stars. For more on that wider era, see our 90s pop culture guide.
Electra’s season also came just before her move into film. Two years after leaving the main cast she played Drew Decker in Scary Movie (2000). Our career timeline shows how the two phases connect.
Later life of the franchise
- 2003: Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding reunion film, with Electra returning as Lani.
- 2017: Paramount released a Baywatch feature film starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. It grossed about $177.9 million worldwide and received mostly negative reviews. Electra was not in the main cast.
