Carmen Electra’s career runs in four broad phases: a music start under Prince in the early 1990s, a run of television fame in 1997–98 through MTV’s Singled Out and Baywatch, a long stretch of film comedy that began with Scary Movie in 2000, and from the mid-2000s onward a mix of reality TV, hosting, guest judging and occasional film roles. This guide walks through each phase in order, with dates checked against the sources listed at the end. For a quick year-by-year list, see our career timeline.

How this article is written: the sections headed “At a glance” and the dated entries are factual and sourced. Short paragraphs labelled “Editor’s note” are our own commentary and are marked as such.

At a glance

  • Born: Tara Leigh Patrick, April 20, 1972, in Sharonville, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati.
  • Stage name: given to her by Prince in the early 1990s.
  • Debut album: Carmen Electra, released February 9, 1993, on Paisley Park/Warner Bros.
  • Breakthrough TV: co-host of MTV’s Singled Out and lifeguard Lani McKenzie in season 8 of Baywatch (1997–98).
  • Best-known film role: Drew Decker in Scary Movie (2000).

1990–1993: Dance training and the Prince years

Electra studied dance as a child in Cincinnati, attending a local dance studio and later the city’s School for Creative and Performing Arts. She graduated from Princeton High School in Sharonville in 1990. Her first professional job that year was as a dancer in a show called It’s Magic at the Kings Island amusement park in Mason, Ohio.

In 1991 she auditioned for a girl group that Prince was putting together. In her own account to E! News, she was not picked for the group, but Prince later contacted her and suggested she work as a solo artist instead. He wrote a song called “Carmen on Top”, and the name Carmen Electra came from that period.

The 1993 album

Her only studio album, Carmen Electra, was recorded at Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota, produced by Prince and released on February 9, 1993. The singles were “Go Go Dancer”, “Everybody Get on Up” and “Fantasia Erotica”. Wikipedia’s article on the album describes it as poorly received. We cover the record in more depth in our separate guide to her early music career.

1997–1998: The television breakthrough

Singled Out (MTV)

MTV’s dating game show Singled Out ran from June 1995 to May 1998, originally hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy. When McCarthy left in early 1997 to star in her own sitcom, Jenny, MTV brought in Electra as co-host alongside Hardwick, and she hosted the show’s last season and a half.

Baywatch season 8

In 1997 she joined the main cast of Baywatch as lifeguard Lani McKenzie for season 8, which aired from September 1997 to May 1998. Wikipedia describes the role as her breakthrough. She returned as Lani for the reunion TV film Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, broadcast in 2003. She also had a recurring role as Sarah Hicks in the drama Hyperion Bay (1998–99).

Her first Playboy pictorial appeared in May 1996, and she appeared in the magazine several more times over the following decade, including on the cover.

Editor’s note: The overlap is what made this period so visible: in the 1997–98 season she was on a top MTV youth show and a globally syndicated drama at the same time. For context on that era, see our 90s pop culture guide.

2000–2008: Film comedy and the spoof era

Starsky & Hutch (2004), in which she plays Staci. Trailer: Warner Bros. Rewind.

Her move into film is usually dated to Scary Movie (2000), directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, in which she played Drew Decker in an opening sequence that parodies the opening of Scream (1996). The film grossed about $278 million worldwide.

Other film roles from this period, as listed in her Wikipedia filmography:

  • 2004: Starsky & Hutch (Stacey Haack). The role won an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss.
  • 2005: Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (Serena Murtaugh) and Dirty Love (Michelle Lopez).
  • 2006: Date Movie (Anne) and Scary Movie 4 (Holly).
  • 2007: Epic Movie (Mystique).
  • 2008: Meet the Spartans (Queen Margo) and Disaster Movie (Beautiful Assassin).

The run also brought a Golden Raspberry Award: she won Worst Supporting Actress at the 27th Razzie Awards in February 2007, for Date Movie and Scary Movie 4. Our filmography page lists these films in one place.

Television alongside the films

2004 was a busy year on TV. She starred with then-husband Dave Navarro in the MTV reality series ‘Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave, hosted Bravo’s Manhunt: The Search for America’s Most Gorgeous Male Model, and appeared as a featured guest with The Pussycat Dolls on VH1 Divas 2004. She also hosted the robot-combat series BattleBots in 2002. In 2007 she published a self-help book, How to Be Sexy.

From the late 2000s her work became more varied. Highlights recorded in her Wikipedia article include:

  • 2011: guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance.
  • 2012: released the single “I Like It Loud”; guest judge on Britain’s Got Talent; two episodes of 90210 as Vesta.
  • 2017: contestant on season 11 of Worst Cooks in America.
  • 2023: played Roxanne in Good Burger 2.

Our TV appearances guide collects the television credits by year.

Why the timeline matters

Editor’s note: Many online biographies blur these phases together, or attach her name to shows she was not in. The most common mistakes we have seen are dating Baywatch to the early 1990s (she joined in 1997) and treating her 1993 album as a hit. Checking the dates against primary listings and contemporary press keeps the record straight. If you spot an error on this page, please tell us through our contact page.
